Friday, November 13th, Standard Tournament. 6:00pm registration, 6:30pm Draft begins. $6 to enter. (towards product and prizes)
Saturday, November 14th, Booser Draft (Zendikar). 1:30pm registration, 2:00pm Draft begins. $16 to enter. (towards product and prizes)

What is the payout for a $16 draft? 8-4-2-2?

It will depend upon the amount of people. Most places I've talked to either pay 8-4 or 5-3-2-2 for $16 entry fee. I think we will probably pay out about 6-4-2-2 for 8 people.

We will be changing the tournament on Saturday (booster draft) from 2pm, to 5pm (4:30pm registration).

Personally, I think going beyond $15 for a booster draft is a bit excessive. Im definitely going to show up when im heavy on finances, but believe it or not the extra $1 on the other side of that 15 is honestly upsetting to me since it is the highest price I have ever seen for a booster draft. In term's of finance, mtgo would have a better expected value for tournament prizes with a draft costing baseline $14 and the same 8-4 or 4-3-2-2 prizes. Personally I don't think its a very good message to send to your player base that tournaments here are going to have a lower value turnout then them just staying at home and playing MTGO.

Just one possible side of the equation, and my two cents.

Last tournament was the most professional one I have been to in several years this side of I-95.
If that extra dollar goes for a less chaotic exp. playing magic then I am all for it.

I agree with the $16 being a bit excessive. I think the optimal payout would be 6-3-2-2 for a $15 fee. Of course I will most likely be there on Saturday to draft and pay whatever they're charging anyway.

We appreciate the feedback and we have decided to do $15 for 5-3-2-2. We look forward to hearing your feedback and we are always welcome to hearing what people think even if it's something they do not like.

Lol, I'd prefer the $16 and the better payout. The top 2 get penalized for being good players in the new setup.

Edit: Why not just take the price of a box of cards, divide it by 8 and do a payout of 5-3-2-2 (the rest of the box) or a 1.5 pack payout per person (average based on an 8 man draft) that enters?

We basically take the cost of a booster (our Zendikar are at 3.49 atm), then give a break on it, somewhere between .25 and .50, then multiply that by the number of people assuming about 4.5 each (3 for the draft, 1.5 for prize support). That's how we arrive at the cost to enter. We can't drop it too much or we won't be able to pay for tables, chairs, electricity, a judge, and other expenses of running a game store. I also decided to pay out to 1/2 the entrants, that way it is more fun for a lot of people rather than just rewarding the top 2. The goal is to have a community of Magic players who can grow together rather than a small group of super competitive players. For the past three tournaments we've also been giving prizes to all who participate, whether it be DCI promos, or playmats, everybody gets something.
